Recent reports and studies lead educators to believe that the image of engineers is playing a role in deterring females from pursuing engineering careers.
“What is turning girls off is the image of an engineer,” said Maria Larrondo-Petrie, FL E ’91, associate dean of academic and international affairs at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University.
Tufts University professor, Karen Panetta, MA D ’85, says engineers have done such a good job of “embedding” what they do that people don’t notice how engineering is part of so many things that have improved the world.
