Re-Building After Disasters

After the recent catastrophic earthquake in Italy, engineers are blaming inadequate buildings for most of the damage.

Meanwhile, another engineer is helping rebuild houses in Pakistan. Darcey Donovan was inspired by the destruction of the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan to held build “quake-resistant houses in poor rural regions using local materials.”

Ms. Donovan, a licensed civil engineer, is using straw and other local materials to build cheaper, more energy efficient, and earthquake-resistant buildings in Pakistan.
