Junkyard Derby at UC San Diego

The sixth annual Junkyard Derby at UC San Diego was held Friday, May 8.

There were 44 student-teams who competed in this year’s event, designing and building race cars made of junk. The teams have two days/nights to build their cars before the teams race down Peterson Hill, in the middle of UC San Diego’s campus.

This year’s winning team/car was composed of students from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

An honorable mention for design and style points went to the Tau Beta Pi team (CA Psi) for designing a pirate ship-themed car. Brian Preedanon, CA Y ’09, helped create the pirate ship.

The Derby is well-attended by UC San Diego students and is supported by industry sponsors like SAIC and Yahoo!
