Two American engineers have been granted the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.
Together Martin Cooper and Raymond S. Tomlinson, NY G ’63, have greatly contributed to advances in human communications and have been fundamental in the development of the mobile phone and e-mail, respectively. Read press release

Tomlinson developed the TENEX operating system and the ARPANET’s first application for e-mail so that messages could be sent to users on other computers. He also chose the @ sign to separate local from global e-mails in the mail address.

Dr. Jim Woodward, GA A ’61, has been named chancellor of North Carolina State University.
Woodward officially started work June 9, and has previously served as chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1989-2005). Read news release

Dasient is the name of the Internet security start-up that boasts the ability to help “businesses avoid losses of traffic, reputation, and revenue. The founders are Google engineers Neil Daswani, NY A ’96, and Shariq Rizvi, and former McKinsey strategy consultant Ameet Ranadive, MA A ’97. Read more
