Chapter News: July 2009

Beginning in the fall of 2009, students can attain a dual degree in liberal arts and engineering from The University of Maine and the University of Maine, Farmington.

Students would spend three years pursuing a bachelor of arts degree at Farmington, and then attend UMaine for two years of study for a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, Chet A. Rock (WA A ’74), says, “combining engineering and liberal arts is becoming more popular as engineers recognize the need for greater exposure to humanities along with their technical skills.”   Read full news release

Grand Valley State University is a finalist for Michigan’s 2009 Carter Partnership Award. The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership for Campus-Community Collaboration is given annually by the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) to the campus and community partners for working together in exceptional ways to improve people’s lives and enhance learning in the process. The GVSU School of Engineering is partnering with Westown Jubilee Housing to provide housing projects with energy management needs and challenges. Professor Shirley Fleischmann, MI L ’79, has been leading 70 students working on a LEED-certified “Green House.” Read a related news article.
