Engineering News Today: July 2009, Part II

University of Texas at El Paso professor and assistant dean of the college of engineering, Ben Flores, Ph.D., TX Q ’85, is one of 22 educators awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

A ceremony will be held to honor these educators in the fall at the White House. The award recognizes those who by “offering their time, encouragement and expertise to students, help ensure that the next generation of scientists and engineers will better reflect the diversity of the United States.”

In other news from the White House, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu will promote the new DOE’s legislation through social networking sites including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Mark Balas (WY A ’65), professor and head of the University of Wyoming Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been appointed as the George J.G. Nicholson Professor of Electrical Engineering to lead the development of the Wyoming Electric Motor Training and Testing Laboratory.

Balas was appointed by current dean of Wyoming’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, Rob Ettema, WY A ’80.
