Recently promoted Major General Jeffrey W. Talley (IN G ’95) has a new mission. After completing his time as a visiting scholar and professor at Ireland’s National Centre for Sensor Research Dublin City University, he will be moving to Southern Methodist University as chairman of the department of environmental and civil engineering.

His experience in Baghdad, Iraq, with the Army Reserve, uniquely qualifies Dr. Talley to lead a newly created institute at SMU to focus on the effects of poverty, help-war ravaged refugees, and improve development in disadvantaged neighborhoods around the world. An invitation-only event sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, was held in February but information about the meeting was not reported until this month by The New York Times.
According to Tom Mitchell, professor of artificial intelligence and machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University, “it was a far-ranging discussion” on issues posed to society by artificial intelligence research and advancement. Read more
