Ten Missouri University of Science and Technology students are working on downtown revitalization plans as part of class work with lecturer Dr. Karl Burgher, MO B ’85.

The engineering projects are targeting economic development of nearby Salem, MO. Current ideas include, a theatre, community civic center, and a recycling center. Read more from Missouri S&T and local newspaper coverage.

A group of scientists at Clemson University will be charged with designing a tube, or proboscis, that mimics the long tube butterflies use to feed.

The proboscis of a butterfly can adapt to different thicknesses of fluids, something that could prove useful in medical testing. One of the researchers, Richard Groff (PA B ’96) says, “The gist of the grant is we are trying to reproduce an artificial version of a butterfly mouth.” Read article or view more images of a butterflies’ proboscis.

Facebook has acquired a Silicon Valley starup, FriendFeed, which allows members to keep track of friends’ activities online and share content.

FriendFeed is viewed as a potential rival to Twitter. The 12 employees from FriendFeed, including co-founder Sanjeev Singh (CA G ’96), will join Facebook in various senior engineering and product roles. Read story
