As the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon approaches, October 9-13 & 15-18, it is time to highlight another team’s 2009 entry.
Virginia Tech’s “LumenHaus” is the name of this year’s newest solar-powered “smart house” from a seasoned university-team. Tech entered teams in 2002 and 2005 that were highly successful.
This year’s entry is built to maximize the use of natural light and features expansive decks. Michael von Spakovsky, AL A ’74, is one of the faculty advisors and Kenny Neal, VA B ’08, is part of the computer sciences team that developed an iPhone application to remotely monitor the home’s energy use. Dean at Wright State College of Science and Mathematics, Michele Wheatly, would like to see more women faculty in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines.
She is the driving force behind a four-university partnership aimed at increasing the number of women STEM faculty. The consortium will monitor recruitment and retention of women in STEM disciplines with a goal of creating a “sustainable woman-friendly STEM community” in Ohio to attract top female faculty.
