Steven Chu, U.S. Energy Secretary, has announced two recipients for the 2009 Enrico Fermi Award. The award winners are Dr. John Bannister Goodenough and Dr. Siegfried S. Hecker, OH A ’65.
“The 2009 Enrico Fermi Award will go to two scientists who have selflessly devoted themselves to our nation’s energy and national security challenges,” said Secretary Chu. “These two individuals are pioneers in innovative research and I want to thank them for their work and congratulate them on this award.”

Dr. Hecker was previously the director of DOE’s Los Alamos National Laboratory, and is currently a research professor and senior fellow at Stanford University. Read the full press release from the U.S. Department of Energy

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has announced that Dr. Jay Liebowitz, DC G ’83, will join UMUC as Orkand Chair of Management and Technology in the UMUC Graduate School of Management and Technology.
Previously, Dr. Liebowitz was a professor at the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University. Read press release

Retired mechanical engineer Don Garren, NC A ’59, and his wife Nancy live in Lambsburg, Virginia.
What they live in, however, is a 7,750-square-foot house that Don built all on his own. It was Don’s first every house building project, and he did it well.

Some of the features of the house include: a solar-heating system, automated game camera to photo wildlife, and 32 south facing windows to allow the sun to heat the house in the winter. Read the article
