Ahead of its 96th Annual Meeting, ASM International The Materials Information Society has announced the 2009 materials awards recipients.

Professor Martin E. Glicksman, NY G ’57, will be awarded honorary membership for “advancing fundamental knowledge of materials science and engineering, leading to deeper understanding and more accurate prediction of cast alloy structures, and the evolution of polycrystalline networks.”

Also to be recognized, Dr. Lawrence E. Murr, TX Q ’62, will receive the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award for year’s of “selfless dedication to the formation of generations of students through teaching, research, mentoring, academic administration, and leadership in the profession.”

The New York Times reported yesterday that Apple has rehired Michael Tchao, CA G ’85, as vice president of product marketing.

Mr. Tchao has most recently been at Nike as the general manager of Nike Techlab. The hiring is fueling rumors that Apple is “gearing up to launch a tablet computer.” Read article for more information

In a story about the 710 Long Life Pavement Project, The Los Angeles Times details the history of the 710 Freeway in California, and the decision to use a new asphalt mixture on top of the old concrete to rehabilitate the freeway.

The article mentions Carl Monismith (CA A ’50), “regarded in some circles as the dean of California pavements,” who is part of the team of engineers working on the project.

Caltrans worker smoothes out asphalt on 710 Interstate

Caltrans has been strategizing the best means of fixing the deteriorating 710 Interstate for more than 10 years. The new asphalt mixture is approximately 12 inches thick, sits on top of the old concrete, and has pieces of rubber in it “to mute the sounds of traffic and to divert water to stop hydroplaning.”
