The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has announced the 2009 Arthur M. Bueche Award Recipient, Dr. Sheila E. Widnall (MA B ’60).

The Bueche Award “honors an engineer who has shown dedication in science and technology, as well as active involvement in determining U.S. science and technology policy…”

Dr. Widnall is a professor at MIT and is being honored “for a remarkable academic career in fluid dynamics combined with the highest levels of public service, and for championing the role of women in engineering.” Read news release for more

A recent article in The Boston Globe details the pursuit of a group of Boston scientists to re-grow cells, tissues, and possibly even organs and limbs.

Highlighted in the article is Dr. Robert S. Langer, NY D ’70, a professor at MIT. Langer is “considered the father of the field of tissue engineering” and is currently attempting to mend spinal cords.

In his current research, Dr. Langer is trying to repair spinal-cord injuries in mice with nervous-system stem cells. Read the full article

Project Manager responsible for the structural design of the Burj Dubai Tower, the world’s tallest structure, Lawrence C. Novak (IL A ’85) is the speaker at the University of Wyoming’s annual H.T. Person Lecture in Engineering and Applied Science.

The lecture will be held Fiday, October 9, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 1045 of the Engineering Building. Novak is the director of engineered buildings for the Portland Cement Association and has worked on the design of the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the Guggenheim Museum, and others, in his 20 years as a structural engineer.
