The results are in from the 2009 Solar Decathlon held at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., October 9-13.
The winners of this year’s U.S. Department of Energy and Solar Decathlon are Team Germany (1st), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2nd), and Team California (3rd).
First time competitors from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette were the “People’s Choice Award Winners” for their house, BeauSoleil. Read more

Popular Science has selected there annual “Brilliant 10, a selection of the brightest young researchers in the country.”
Dennis Hong, WI A ’94, an associate professor at Virginia Tech University was selected for his work with robots.

Hong is currently working on CHARLI – for Cognitive Humanoid Autonomous Robot with Learning Intelligence.

Also selected was Jerome Lynch, NY I ’97, associate professor at the University of Michigan.

Lynch is a civil engineer whose research focuses on continuously monitoring bridges for structural failures with his “sensor skin.” Read more

The Society of Women Engineers is recognizing employees of Northrop Grumman Corporation “for their contributions to the engineering community and professional excellence.”
Martha Addison, AL B 2009, has received the 2009 Collegiate Member Award.
Addison is currently a design engineer at Grumman’s Aerospace Systems. While at the University of Alabama she was president of her collegiate chapter of SWE, a member of Tau Beta Pi, and a member of AIAA. She was recognized at WE09, the Society’s Annual Conference.
