An article published in the October 2009 issue of DISCOVER Magazine profiles Stanford University’s Associate Professor Kwabena Boahen, Ph.D., (MD A ’89).

Boahen is working on “a new kind of computer… (based on the) organized chaos of the human brain.” The key to this endeavor is small silicon wafers that make up the new neural supercomputer, the Neurogrid.

The article details Boahen’s educational background, including his lab partners from the 1980s, many of whom are also in the neuromorphic electronics field, Rahul Sarpeshkar (MA B ’90), Paul Hasler (AZ B ’90), and others.

At the 2009 Annual Meeting of AIChE, the Institute’s Award for Excellence in Industrial Gas Technology went to Arizona State University’s Jerry Y.S. Lin.

Lin was nominated by Dr. Robert Pfeffer, NY E ’56, who described Lin’s accomplishments in chemical engineering as “monumental research and educational contributions.”

A research team of graduate students and professors at Lehigh University (PA) and Rice University (TX) have published an article detailing their research findings on the “image nanostructure of a solid acid catalyst and the subsequent boosting of its catalytic activity.”

The team, which studied “a variety of tungsten-oxide species,” is led by Israel Wachs, NY H ’73, Lehigh professor. The other authors and researchers are: Wu Zhou, Elizabeth Ross-Medgaarden, William V. Knowles (MO A ’96), Michael S. Wong, and Christopher J. Kiely. Another collaborator mentioned for his work with the team is Matthew Neurock, MI A ’86, a professor at the University of Virginia.
