Recently, the Obama administration has recommitted itself to “women’s advancement in the sciences.” This year marks the 37th anniversary of Title IX and efforts continue toward understanding how a growing pool of women in research science continue to “leak out before obtaining tenured positions at colleges and universities.”
A recent advice column in The Chronicle of Higher Education updates the current research of gender discrimination coinciding with the publication of a new report, “Staying Competitive: Patching America’s Leaky Pipeline in the Sciences.”
Among other findings, it was found “that married female scientists with young children who have received their P.h.D.’s are 35 percent less likely to enter a tenure-track position than are married men with children. Read full article

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a grant to Indiana to “lead an effort with Michigan and Ohio to help laid-off autoworkers find jobs in the renewable-energy industry.”
A partnership between the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development, Michigan Dept. of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, and the Ohio Dept. of Jobs and Family Services, will work to identify necessary skill sets for green industry jobs and present a report on their findings and recommendation in 2011. The deadline for receiving applications for the 77th class of Tau Beta Pi Fellows is January 31, 2010. In 2009, the Fellowship Program was awarded the Excellence in Engineering Collaboration Award from ASEE.
Tau Beta Pi is planning to award at least 100 scholarships this year. The deadline for submitting an application is March 1, 2010. Learn more
