Tau Beta Pi: Achievement, Service, & Meaningful Membership

The New Mexico State University Alumni Association will honor the fall 2009 class of Outstanding Seniors next week.

Sandra Chavez, NM A 2009, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Senior award for NMSU’s College of Engineering.

She has been an officer in Tau Beta Pi, is captain of the Steel Bridge team, and is an active volunteer in the local Habitat for Humanity. Chavez can also weld and is learning how to play the piano. Read news release for more

Tau Beta Pi chapters pride themselves on giving back to their campuses and local communities. At Wayne State University the Michigan Epsilon Chapter was recently recognized for more than a decade of offering a free tutoring program in the College of Engineering.

To highlight this dedication to excellence, this year’s tutoring coordinator, Muneer Ali (MI E 2010), was profiled for a campus publication. Here’s what he had to say about the tutoring program:

“It is very important for older students to help out the younger students,” said Ali.

An engineering freshmen at Wayne State had this to say about the free tutoring resource:

“It has been an excellent experience, to say the very least. I absolutely could not have gone without TBP assistance, as this program has truly been helpful to me.”

In a recent student publication, The Daily Reveille, at Louisiana State University, there was an article warning students to be wary of honor societies and similar organizations.

The story interviews mechanical engineering junior Ifeanyi Okoro, LA A 2011, about the plethora of messages he has received from honor societies, “If the mailing list is very long, then I imagine it’s something everyone and anyone can get, so I just don’t bother.”

Okoro continues to explain that he chose to pursue membership in only two honor societies: the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Tau Beta Pi (initiated 11/19/2009). Read more

Tau Beta Pi is proud to offer students a meaningful experience with important member benefits and opportunities.

Opportunities such as the ASCE Pre-College Outreach Program contest: “How do you Make Your Mark on the World.” To enter a university/college must create a video “to illustrate why your school is THE BEST at applying your engineering knowledge and skills to volunteer projects that make a difference.”
