The University of Delaware announced that one of its alumnus has been named vice chair of President Barack Obama’s Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.

James W. Wagner, DE A ’75, was appointed to the commission on November 24 by an executive order.

Wagner is currently the president of Emory University. Dean of the UD College of Engineering, Michael Chajes (MA Z ’84) had this to say about Wagner’s appointment, “(his appointment) demonstrates that a degree in engineering can lead in many directions. It is a testament to his experience and perspective…” Read news release

A recent article in the Daily Record (NJ) highlights the career path of a female environmental engineer.

Cosema E. “Connie” Crawford recently joined The Louis Berger Group as senior vice president for U.S. engineering operations.

Identified by many as a ‘trailblazer’ for women in engineering, Crawford gives credit to her family upbringing, a high school guidance counselor, and a ride in a helicopter from a woman engineer, for her decision to pursue an engineering career.

Researchers at Arizona State University “are working on optimizing photosynthetic microbes commonly found in pond scum.”

They settled on this bacteria after determining that it would be easier to genetically manipulate and “in theory produce more biofuel than any traditional crop.”

Read the full article for more information on the breakthrough, which achieves a “self-destruct” of the bacteria that leads “to a green recovery of materials not requiring energy dependent physical or chemical processes.”
