Engineering FYI: Chapter-Related, Part II, December 2009

A group of professors at Worcester Polytechnic Institute have been working for the past decade to prevent another tragedy like the one in 1999, when six Worcester firefighters died fighting a five-alarm fire.

After the fire, David Cyganski (MA A ’75) asked, “What can we do to help?” Today, Dr. Cyganski and the group from WPI are “close to commercializing some of the safety products they have been developing.”

One of the new products is the First Responder Locator System, “a cellphone-size transmitter that sends location information to a command station.”

Kettering University has announced a gift from the estate of Earl (MI E ’40) and Lanice Riopelle.

Kettering, in Flint, MI, was originally called the General Motors Institute and was eventually renamed after longtime chief researcher for General Motors Co., Charles Kettering, OH G 1904.

Charles Kettering was Earl Riopelle’s mentor and his gift to the University is the largest it has ever received.

Technology professionals and members of the High TechConsortium of Southern New Mexico are working to petition the New Mexico Legislature to “restore funding to New Mexico State University’s new aerospace engineering program.”

Funding for the degree program is projected to be cut by 38 percent. The program was approved in 2003 and started offering classes in 2006. Read the news article
