The New York Times reported on President Obama’s announcement of a new initiative to train math and science teachers in America.
Wednesday’s announcement coincided with awards for excellence in teaching and mentoring to more than 100 educators. One of the teachers honored was Ben Flores, Ph.D., (TX Q ’85) from The University of Texas at El Paso.
“This is a great honor for me,” professor Flores said. “I was very happy that … my work is now being recognized at the highest level.”

Southern Methodist University has announced that senior electrical engineering student, Ceena Hall, TX I 2010, has been selected to participate in NASA’s Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP).
Hall’s internship begins this month and will run through May 2010. Read the full news release for more information.

The Boeing Company has announced the promotion of nine senior engineering leaders.
According to Boeing Chief Technology Officer John Tracy, CA T ’86, “Revitalizing the important role of such senior engineering leaders will help ensure engineering excellence in all our products.”
The Seattle Times article also reports that five engineering vice presidents have been promoted inside the company’s defense and space division.
