Engineering Trends: 2010

A report by the University of Southern California has identified U.S. universities with good practices in enrolling Hispanics in STEM fields.

The top three universities in awarding science, technology, engineering and math degrees to Hispanics are: Florida International University (613), University of Texas at El Paso (404), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (357).

This week President Obama is continuing his “pledge to reduce the role of the world’s most deadly weapons,” nuclear missiles.

Plans under consideration include the shutdown of one leg of the nuclear arms triad and the possible adoption of a “no-first-use” policy. Read article from The Boston Globe

Dr. Martin E. Hellman, NY E ’66, has been working on analyzing the risk of “our current approach to nuclear weapons.”

Dr. Hellman is a professor at Stanford University and has a website detailing the keys to defusing the nuclear threat.”

Dr. Hellman also authored the paper “Risk Analysis of Nuclear Deterrence” in the spring 2008 issue of THE BENT.

A recent article in Global Times, highlights the need for increased enrollment in engineering fields in China.

According to the article, this past year “the number of students majoring in engineering at domestic university sunk below 10 percent of all graduates.”

In U.S. domestic news, the American Chemical Society released the numbers for the “top producer(s) of chemical engineering master’s graduates.

Topping this year’s list is Lamar University (TX), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Southern California. Read article
