The AP reported that Empower Playgrounds Inc., (EPI) has installed 10 merry-go-rounds as playground generators in Ghana, with plans to install another 25 more in 2010.
EPI founder and chairman of the board, Ben Markham (UT B ’71), “worked with Brigham Young University students to develop a merry-go-round that could harness enough energy to power special lanterns.”
Markham had this to say about the motivation for the nonprofit organization, “If you want a peaceful Earth, you have to get rid of the differences. You can’t have some countries with high technology and other countries still not have light at night.” Read article

Dr. Henry Petroski, P.E., (NY X ’63), has written a third book entitled, The Essential Engineer.

A review of the book was written in The San Diego Union-Tribune, which summarized the “central premise of the book is that most people do not really understand what engineers do and so, invariably, underappreciate their contributions to life and the world.”

The Physics of Soccer: Using Math and Science to Better Your Game, which won Editor’s Choice Award from publisher iUnivers, Inc. has recently been published. The book is authored by Dr. Adedeji Badiru, P.E., (TN G ’79).

The book “uses and education theme to encourage youth to pursue sports from a more intellectual standpoint beyond the stereotypical viewpoint of brawny pursuit.”
