The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has announced the 2010 recipients of the awards for extraordinary scientific achievement. There are 17 individuals being recognized in several areas.

Norman R. Augustine, NJ D ’57, is the recipient of the NAS Award in Aeronautical Engineering.

Augustine is the retired chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp. and is being recognized for his service and leadership in the engineering profession. Read press release

A news story from Vermont Public Radio details recent statements from Vermont Yankee that “it had underground pipes that could leak radioactivity.”

According to reports, the state of Vermont has known about the potential leaky pipes since last summer and was alerted to the problem by nuclear engineer, Arnie Gundersen (NY G ’71).

Gundersen is a consultant for the Vermont Legislature and a nuclear engineering safety and reliability expert with Fairewinds Associates, Inc.

The Vermont Department of Public Service continues to investigate the situation.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on a recent “federal grant program designed to help institutions attract, retain, and promote more female scientists.” The funding was provided by the National Science Foundation.

In the article, Eve Riskin (MA B ’84) is highlighted for her work at the University of Washington involving the UW ADVANCE Center for Institutional Change.
