Engineering FYI: Chapter-Related, Part II

A recent article in the Rapid City Journal highlights the technology and research being performed at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

The school has the only friction stir welder in the United States. The welder is being used for research and work by private firms that is “drawing Defense Department research money.”

Colorado State University has unveiled a two-megawatt solar plant. There are more than 8,000 Trina Solar panels over 15 acres of the university’s campus. Read full news release

The plant is owned and operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures and features panels that rotate to track the sun’s movement.

The plant is not only the second solar project within the CSU System, but it is also one of the largest solar plants on a university campus in the United States.

The Oredigger Newspaper, the student newspaper at the Colorado School of Mines, recently highlighted mechanical engineering senior Tom Begley (CO A 2010) as its “Geek of the Week.”

In the article, Begley discusses his hobbies including: Tau Beta Pi, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and building a recharger for his iPod from scratch.
