This week the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) is hosting the “Building Partnerships and Pathways to Address Engineering Grand Challenges Conference.”
The conference includes panel discussions on world problems, a meeting of universities’ engineering deans, and a focus on diversification of the work force. Students and officials from at least 60 universities are expected to attend.
Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, CA B ’56, director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas at Austin, is one of the keynote speakers for the event. Read full article

Senior civil engineering major, James Woidt (NH A 2010), has received a scholarship for the 2009-2010 school year from the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO).
Woidt was chosen as the sole recipient of the ASDSO Undergraduate Scholarship. He is currently vice president of the New Hampshire Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at the University of New Hampshire. Read more from the Greater Binghamton PressConnects

Valparaiso University has announced that a “University professor and a team of engineering students have begun a three-year research project examining how structures respond to the natural forces generated by earthquakes.”
The project lead is associate professor Dr. Michael J. Hagenberger, PA E ’92. The project includes three phases, including the testing phase in 2011.
Kaylene Boroski, IN D 2011, is one of two Valpo students assisting on the project that is collaborating with research teams from the University of Minnesota and the University of Texas. Read news release
