Engineering Spotlight: Awards & Leaders

The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation has announced the 2010-2011 Hertz Foundation Fellowships.

There are fifteen fellows in this year’s class, five of whom are Tau Beta Pi members. Here is a brief profile of the five fellows:

Andrea Barrett, GA A 2010, a biomedical engineering major who recently traveled to Japan for a summer internship through NanoJapan.

David Eric Karp, NJ D 2010, an aerospace engineering major, 2008-09 Tau Beta Pi scholar, and a recent NASA intern.

Joseph Rosenthal, TX G 2010, majoring in bioengineering, research focus in virus-based biosensors, and a 2009-10 Goldwater Scholar.

Justin Solomon, CA G 2010, a computer science and mathematics major, former intern at the Naval Research Lab, and a published author in the field of computer science.

Brandon DeKosky, KA A 2010, majoring in chemical engineering, research focus in biomaterials and tissue engineering, and a 2008-09 Tau Beta Pi scholar.

Sandeep Vij, CA H ’86, was elected as the new President and CEO of MIPS Technologies, Inc., in January of 2010.

In his previous position Mr. Vij was vice president and general manager of the Broadband and Comsumer Division of Cavium Networks. Read press release

In the upcoming April issue of Time magazine there is a story about the increase in lithium-ion-battery start-up companies.

A123 Systems is profiled as one of the up-and-coming companies producing lithium-ion-batteries. The president and chief executive officer, David Vieau (NY B ’72) is quoted in the story about the “tremendous competition” in the field.

Ann Marie Sastry, DE A ’89, is also profiled for her start-up Sakti3, which is working on “developing solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Read article
