This week a group of companies and the Boston University College of Engineering announced that they have “developed a fully automated, scalable ‘factory’ that uses natural green plants to efficiently produce large quantities of vaccines and therapeutics within weeks.”

The new plant-based vaccine factory resulted from a collaboration between Fraunhofer USA Centers and Boston University. Dr. Robert Brown, TX A ’73, president of Boston University said, “This is a perfect example of coupling engineering expertise and scientific advancement to cost-effectively meet a social need.”

Dr. L Rafael Reif, MA B ’73, will speak April 29 as part of The Annual Charles L. Miller Lecture.

Dr. L. Rafael Reif

Dr. Reif is currently the Maseeh Professor of Emerging Technology and has been MIT’s Provost since 2005. The title of his lecture is Challenges and Opportunities Facing MIT: A View from the Provost’s Office.

Columbia University and IBM are working together on a new initiative to train highly skilled positions in “everything from building engineers who understand energy efficiency to chemists who can help come up with new and more sustainable materials.”
