The National Academy of Sciences has announced the election 72 new members.

According to the press release, “(the Academy) is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. It was established in 1963 by a congressional act of incorporation signed by Abraham Lincoln that calls on the Academy to act as an official adviser to the federal government, upon request, in any matter of science and technology.”

This year four of the newly elected members are Tau Beta Pi members:

Alexis T. Bell, MA B ’64, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Richard F. Eisenberg, Ph.D., NY K ’44, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Rochester.

Dr. Steven E. Koonin, CA B ’72, U.S. Department of Energy undersecretary for science.

Dr. Jack K. Wolf, PA D ’56, Professor at Center for Magnetic Recording, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla.

A recent article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press discusses professional female engineers and the continued challenges they face.

According to the article “only one out of every 10 engineers is a woman, but many of Chattanooga’s female engineers say they hardly feel like a discriminated-against minority.”

The University of Maryland’s James Clark School of Engineering has announced the 2009-10 awards and honors.

Among the winners:

Jennifer Au, MD B 2011, received the David Arthur Berman Memorial Award as the student majoring in chemical and biomolecular engineering with the highest GPA and who has been elected to Tau Beta Pi.

Marina Feric, MD B 2010, received the Chairman’s Award for excellence in academics and outstanding service to the department.
