The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the University of California, San Diego is preparing to build a new center for structural and materials engineering research.
The new building will also provide space for the new nano-engineering department at UCSD. Dean of the university’s Jacobs School of Engineering, Dr. Frieder Seible (CA Y ’76), says, “this (center) is huge for us because, for the first time, we’ll have a new building that’s not just dedicated to one department.”

Princeton University has announced the 2010 Spirit of Princeton Award winners. This year eight students were selected from more than 90 nominations.
The award honors undergraduate students at Princeton “for their positive contributions to campus life.” Electrical engineering major Muhammad J. Amjad, NJ D 2010, is one of this year’s winners.
Amjad is founder of a student group to create awareness of Pakistani arts and culture, has been a residential college adviser at Rockefeller College for two years, and will be working at Microsoft Corp. as a program manager after graduation. Read the news release

A project “aimed at removing carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants in a cheaper way” at the University of Kentucky’s Applied Energy Research Center, has been awarded a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The announcement was was made early this week and several other universities and organizations received grants for similar projects related to renewable electricity.
