A group of engineering students from South Carolina University used their senior design project to help an eight-year-old amputee ride her own bicycle.

The students were advised on their project by Dr. David Rocheleau, VT A ’81, associate professor at USC. The four students developed a bicycle “that didn’t require the ability to use both legs to pedal.”

The State News is reporting that Michigan State University professor R. Marc Worden, TN A ’82, and a team of researchers have received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to “design a reactor to test” the production of an alternative fuel, called isobutanol.

Alan I. Taub, RI A ’76, believes that the future of the automotive industry includes cars that drive themselves. In a recent Washington Post article, Taub says, “I see the potential for launching fully autonomous vehicles by 2020.”

Dr. Taub is currently the vice president for research and development at General Motors. Read the article for more information on current models of vehicles that are being tested with “senors and adaptive cruise control” to improve driver safety.
