Chief executive, William Swanson (CA M ’72), of Raytheon recently said that “it keeps getting harder to find” engineers. Swanson was speaking at the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
The story from The Boston Globe, reports that Raytheon Co. plans to hire 4,500 engineers this year, but Swanson says that efforts at education reform (to produce more engineers) is “one of the hardest topics I’ve ever worked on.”

As the solar powered race cars made there way to Jefferson City (MO), Missourinet highlighted the 2010 American Solar Challenge.
The collegiate competition features ten teams on a 1,100-mile long race from Tulsa to Chicago. The race cars are solar powered and the teams are from domestic and international universities.
The article features the team from Missouri S&T, ‘Solar Miner VII.’ The students talked about the design of their car (house insulation foam wrapped in Kevlar and carbon fiber) and the team work and hands-on education.

Woman Engineer “is the most widely read recruitment magazine for women engineers” in the United States. The 19th annual list was part of the magazine’s Spring 2010 issue and was based on feedback from readers.
