A week-long summer program to attract and retain female math, science, and engineering majors is taking place at Clemson University.

The WISE Experience, (women in science and engineering), started ten years ago to increase the number of women in the mostly male-dominated fields.

One of the professors teaching the math class, Dr. Joel V. Brawley (NC A ’60) professor emeritus of mathematical sciences at Clemson, said, “there’s no pressure, but they put the pressure on themselves to understand.”

Researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University are working on a new patch that would allow annual flu vaccines to be delivered by mail.

One of the researchers, Mark Prausnitz, Ph.D. (CA G ’88), worked on the new “microneedle patch” that would deliver the vaccine. Findings from the research group can be found in the recent edition of Nature Medicine.

The New York Times is reporting on “a new generation of mainframes” from I.B.M. introduced this week.

The machines are being touted as faster, more powerful, and more energy efficient. The most significant change “is that other kinds of computers can now be plugged into the mainframe to manage a data center.”
