Earlier this month, Dr. Dale E. Klein, P.E. (MO A ’70), was elected to the Southern Company board of directors.

Dr. Klein is currently the associate vice president of research and associate director of the Energy Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also a former chairman (2006-09) of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

A $10 million “competition to create a production-capable, well-performing, low-emissions, and safe 100 MPGe car” is nearing its completion. The Automotive X Prize began with 111 teams from 15 countries and is now down to 22.
One of those team, Edison2, is still competing with its Very Light Car. The engine for the Very Light Car was designed and built by Raetech Corp. The car has unofficially achieved 129 miles per gallon during training. Read more about the engine here.

Proteus Biomedical, Inc., is working on a new generation of medical devices, including a new “smart pill” that has an ingestible microchip, called the Raisin, that can “transmit to an external receiver from within the body.”
Two of the three co-founders of Proteus are Tau Beta Pi members. George Savage, M.D. (MA H ’81), is the chief medical officer and co-founder. Mark Zdeblick, Ph.D. (IL A ’81), is the chief technology officer and co-founder.
