The University of Louisville’s Duthie Center for Engineering has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification after its recent renovations. Read more

The Duthie Center is the home of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering. In 2009, a sculpture named Integrity was dedicated outside the J.B. Speed building. The monument was the vision of Bernard A. Dahlem, KY B ’51, and was completed by Geoffrey Atherton with support from Dean Mickey R. Wilhelm, KY B ’70.

A summer science program hosted at the University of Virginia targets collegiate undergraduates in the STEM disciplines.

The program is part of an alliance between Virginia and North Carolina and was initially funded by the National Science Foundation. This year 12 students spent eight weeks “conducting hands-on research” in hopes of “boosting the number of underrepresented-minority students in STEM.”

Officials from the X-Prize announced this week a new competition for teams “to demonstrate the most efficient method of capturing crude oil from the ocean surface.”

The Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X Challenge has a $1 million purse and was inspired by the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil spill and cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico.
