The Southern Company recently announced several leadership appointments.

Penny M. Manuel, AL G ’85, has been named the executive vice president, engineering and construction services, generation. Manuel joined Southern in 1982 and has held various management positions. Most recently, she was vice president of technical services. Read the full press release

An Accelerated Master’s Program at the University of Virginia is profiled by The News Leader. The design of the program is such that practicing engineers can “strengthen analytical and problem-solving skills in just 11 months while continuing their careers.”

The students work on projects with organizations that are related to “systems” problems. Students can earn a master’s degree in systems engineering while tackling real problems.

In a recent study published by Rice University, the pros and cons of widespread use of nanomaterials in the construction industry are reported.

Dr. Pedro Alvarez, P.E. (MI G ’89), was one of the co-authors of the study. He says, “The advantages of using nanomaterials in construction are enormous. But there are reasonable concerns about unintended consequences as well.”
