Expanding Horizons: Engineering

Dr. Bill Hammack, MI B ’84, is the “Engineer Guy” and a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He produces essays for Illinois Public Radio, creates videos to explore the technological world, and spent 2005-06 as a U.S. Diplomat working as a senior science adviser at the Department of State. He “focuses on explaining engineering and technology to the general public (with the goal) to enhance engineering awareness.”

At the Purdue University Birck Nanotechnology Center, assistant professor Jason Vaughn Clark, Ph.D., is working on a “self-calibrating MEMS device.”

The research was recently highlighted by Popular Science. Read the full article for the potential benefits of the “new technology, termed electro micro metrology (EMM), (which) allows engineers to determine the force being applied to a MEMS device.”

Engineers in Germany have developed a CyberMotion Simulator that “is intended to realistically replicate the experience of driving a Ferrari.”
