Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, San Diego State University is offering two new programs in an effort to “prepare veterans for engineering careers.”

San Diego SERVICE (Success in Engineering Through Internship and Career Experience) is one of the new programs that will attempt to connect veterans in SDSU’s College of Engineering with year-round internships.

The second program will include calculus and trigonometry courses “through San Diego City College to ensure veterans are prepared for the engineering curriculum.” Read full article

Dr. David Hayhurst (AL E ’72), dean of the SDSU College of Engineering, said, “Usually veterans come to us with a great deal of skill and expertise in field work. But it’s like they’ve done the lab work without most of the classroom work. They need both to excel in our program and their careers.”

The San Jose Mercury News recently highlighted Pacific Plastics & Engineering, a medical-device maker. The company is preparing to add its seventh cleanroom in which to assemble “medical devices used in minimally invasive surgery known as laparoscopy.”

The company is beginning to expand again and recently hired six new employees working in design engineering, tooling, assembly, and quality assurance.

In a recent press release, Westinghouse Electric Company announced the opening of a “First-of-a-Kind Startup Test Engineer Training Facility.” The new facility will be located in Cranberry Township, PA, at the headquarters of Westinghouse.

The goal of the training will be to educate “employees, customers, and industry representatives on the proper testing and safe maintenance of Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant systems.” The first class of students began their first session on August 30.
