The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announces the election of six new members to its Board of Directors and four new members to its Member Council for the 2011-12 term. All will be installed on November 13, 2010, at the SME Fall Board of Directors Meeting in Dearborn, Mich. Their terms officially begin on January 1, 2011.
Two of the directors are Tau Bates:
Warren R. DeVries, Ph.D. (MI G ’71), dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Thomas R. Kurfess, Ph.D., P.E. (MA B ’86), a leading expert in the field of microscale manufacturing metrology.

Princeton University has announced that professor Margaret Martonosi, NY D ’86, has been named a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and of the IEEE, an international professional association for the advancement of technology.
Dr. Martonosi was one of 47 ACM members elected fellows “for their contributions to computing and computer science that have contributed fundamental knowledge to the field and generated a broad range of innovations in industry, commerce, entertainment, and education.” The society formally recognized the 2009 fellows earlier this year at its annual awards banquet.

The White House touted a project “to build one of the most advanced electron microscopes in the world” as one of “100 Recovery Act Projects that are Changing America.”
Dr. Philip E. Baston, NY D ’70, is serving as the principal investigator of the research at Rutgers University’s Institute for Advanced Materials, Devices and Nanotechnology. The project was funded through a NSF grant.
