The Associated Press is reporting on “the latest airport security technology being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (NM).”
A new generation liquid scanner was tested this week at Albuquerque’s international airport. The device is several years from being used, but could allow airline passengers to bring liquids back onto planes.
Stephen W. Surko, P.E., MD G ’82, program manager of the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency, said, “what we’re doing is really looking for the real dangers, like liquid homemade explosives.” Read the full article

The James Dyson Foundation has announced the winner of the 2010 James Dyson Award. Described as an “international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers.”
This year’s winning design is the Longreach Buoyancy Deployment System. The Longreach is a “bazooka that fires life-belts up to 500-feet, targeting drowning victims.” The system uses foam to inflate and therefore cannot be punctured. Read more from Wired
