Adam Gormley, PA A ’06, and the University of Utah’s Research Park were recently highlighted by KSL-TV (UT) for research work in the field of nanotechnology.

Gormley is a graduate student at Utah and is working with an undergraduate student on “turning little nanorods into sort of attackers on a white horse.” Using a fiber-optic laser to generate heat and induce “tumor hyperthermia” to burn out cancer cells. Click here for more

An article from the U.S. News and World Report, details a new program to allow “40 recent engineering Ph.Ds to conduct research at some of the nation’s leading companies.”
The Corporate Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was started by the ASEE and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). One of the first beneficiaries of the Program is profiled in the article, Erin Surdo (WI A ’00).
Erin recently finished her graduate degree in environmental engineering and is now a researcher at BioCee, Inc. through the program allowing for research fellowship opportunities within a corporation.

Results fro two research projects at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and funded by Italian oil company Eni, are highlighted by CNET.
The first is “paper-thin solar cells” that can generate energy. The prototype was able to light a small LED display. Future plans for the paper would include “using cheap paper solar cells on blinds and shades or perhaps on the cover of a laptop.”
