Rhodes Scholars, Innovation, & Perseverance

The 2011 Rhodes Scholars have been announced. There are 32 American winners this year. Two of the Scholars are Tau Beta Pi members: (click here for full list)

Jared A. Dunnmon, NC G 2011, is a mechanical engineering senior at Duke University. His “public policy and scientific interests focus on energy.”

Jennifer I. Lai, MA B 2011, is majoring in biological engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is an accomplished pianist and has done research in “the use of engineering tools towards the development of protein therapeutics.”

The Denver Post recently discussed women in the aerospace field with the upcoming 2011 National Space Symposium (April 11-14) in Boulder, CO.

According to the article, women comprise roughly ten percent of aerospace-related workers. Female leaders of aerospace are briefly profiled, including Joanne Maguire (MI A ’75).

Engineering professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Dr. Penny Axelrad (MA B ’85), says that aerospace (engineering) requires “teamwork and looking at the big picture.” As a graduate mentor, she credits strong advisers to keeping her on track and looks to keep women from getting discouraged from pursuing aerospace engineering.

With Microsoft’s release of the new Kinect gaming device, The New York Times profiled innovation related to the manipulation of the new technology.

Open source code has been published allowing the Kinect device to be used with a computer. Having only been released on November 4th, the system is being used to create 3-D graphics. Read the full article for more information
