The Indiana Department of Transportation is teaming with civil engineers from Purdue University to save more than $1 million dollars thanks to a new mixture of tire shreds and sand in road construction projects.

Research was done by Purdue engineers to determine the benefits of using the tire-shred mixture. “The tire shred-sand mixture is more easily compacted than other materials, saving energy and representing another source of cost savings.” Read the full article for more information

An article this week from The Detroit News gives the details about plans by General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC to create a cobined 2,000 high-tech jobs in the region.

Engineers and other technical staff will be hired to “bolster development of everything from small cars to electric vehicles.”

An agreement has been signed to create the world’s first hybrid ferry that runs on hydrogen, solar, and wind power. The ferry will provide service to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
