Engineering News: On Campus

The Post-Standard is reporting that Syracuse University has received a grant to recruit women faculty in the STEM disciplines.

The grant awarded by the NSF went to seven other universities for similar recruiting efforts. Currently, only 21 percent of SU’s STEM faculty are women. Read the full article for more details on the grant and SU’s plans for hiring and retaining women STEM faculty members.

The interim dean of the College of Engineering at UNLV, Dr. Rama Venkat (NV B ’83), had an idea of how to make the senior design competition more relevant businesswise, partner with the College of Business.

For this year’s competition teams were comprised of business students and engineering students. The first year of the partnership was very successful. Several inventions have promising business prospects, including a “better moving dolly” and a wastewater management system.

Yesterday, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Inc., announced the 2010 winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy. Sam Acho, from the University of Texas, was named college football’s top scholar-athlete.
