The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has announced that Chris Letchford, Ph.D., is to become a professor and head of the department of civil and environmental engineering beginning in January 2011.
Most recently Letchford was professor and head of the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania, Australia. Read the press release

Roy J. Lycke, IA A 2011, was highlighted in a student profile series at Iowa State University. Lycke is a computer engineering major who will graduate with a double minor in bioengineering and psychology.

A functioning replica of an ancient analgog computer built by the Greeks (150 B.C.) to calculate celestial events and eclipses has been recreated by a software engineer from Legos.

Andrew Carol built his version of the Antikythera Mechanism at the request of Nature.com. The new machine “uses about 110 gears, seven complete differentials” and does what the ancient machine did. Read the full article here
