This past November, Gertrude Neumark Rothschild passed away at the age of 83. Dr. Rothschild was a professor emerita of materials science and engineering at Columbia University.
She will be remembered for her research into light-emitting and laser diodes, or LED’s, and her successful legal battles against the companies that failed to credit her work.

The University at Buffalo The State University of New York has announced that the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences will name its new building Barbara and Jack Davis Hall.

The San Francisco Chronicle has detailed a recently built zero-net energy cottage in the Berkeley (CA) area. Built as a second home for a UC Berkeley professor, the cottage includes, solar panels, warm wooden walls, and a shaded front porch.
The home has led to a study on the “potential for adding single units to the backyards within a half-mile of five Easy Bay BART stations.” The home owner worked with engineering students from Berkeley on ways to “keep the cottage off the energy grid.” Read the full article here
