West Virginia University has announced that engineer researchers have received a grant from the Gas Technology Institute to use data-intensive science to optimize gas production of the Marcellus Shale.
Dr. Shahab Mohaghegh, TX L ’85, is leading a team of researchers “in applying the latest technology reservoir modeling.” Dr. Mohaghegh says, “People in the industry are quite interested to see how our research in this area progresses.” Read the full press release

Kettering University (MI) has a new “shaker-lab” with both crash and durability testing capabilities. According to ABC12, this might be the only U.S. university owned shaker.
The focus of the lab will be on testing the durability of new cars, especially for new hybrid batteries, fuel cells, and hydrogen storage tanks. Read more about the applications of the lab from the Flint Journal

The El Paso Times is reporting that a large gift has been received by the University of Texas El-Paso to develop a new engineering and leadership degree. Read the article here
Bob Malone, an alumnus of UTEP and former chief executive officer of BP America, made the gift. The program will offer a bachelor of science degree in engineering leadership.
