Last week, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced the election of their president, home secretary, and four other members to serve on its governing council.
Ralph J. Cicerone was elected to a second six-year term as president of NAS. Susan R. Wessler becomes the first female to serve as home secretary of NAS. All positions and terms being in July. Read the news release for more information

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has announced that NASA has selected the university to manage the Sample Return Robot Challenge. The new contest will take place in the spring of 2012 and “calls upon teams of roboticists to build, program and demonstrate robots that can locate and retrieve geologic samples from a wide and varied terrain without human control.”
According to the article, WPI is currently the only university that offers robotics engineering degrees for bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D’s.
