Engineering Contests & Hands-On Activities

The Arizona Daily Star reported on the recent paper plane contest at the University of Arizona as part of Engineers Week 2011. Teams from different engineering groups on campus took part in the “Taking Flight Design Challenge.”

The article highlighted the Arizona Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi’s team and their paper plane design. Jonathan Gross, AZ A 2011, was part of the team and said, “he was disappointed (that the team’s plane did not win), but there is always next year.”

The University of Alabama in Huntsville has announced engineering outreach activities for E-Week 2011. There will be a popsicle stick bridge contest, a solar car challenge, and a closing E-Week banquet with awards and guest speaker Terry Townsend, P.E. (TN G ’71). Mr. Townsend is currently the president/owner of Townsend Engineering, Inc.

The second annual “Wow! That’s Engineering!” event took place at Sequoia Middle School in Redding, CA, this past weekend. Hosted by the local chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, the event helps young girls maintain an interest in science and engineering.

This year there were three hands-on activities for the female participants to take part in. One opportunity was for the girls to build their own basic water filtration system. Read the full article for more on the engineering development activities
