Honors, Inspiration, & Lunar Landings

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is recognizing twelve individuals with Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer awards. Two of the engineers are Tau Bates: (Read press release)

Dr. Sayata Ghose (OH K ’04) – Sr. research scientist with the National Institute of Aerospace

Dr. Kevin T. Turner (MD A ’99) – Assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In the Huffington Post, Dean Kamen, founder and president of DEKA Research & Development Corp., discusses the progress and future of the FIRST program.

Kamen founded For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology (FIRST) two decades ago. The competition has become a global success in promoting engineering and science. The article, touches on many current issues related to developing more American engineers and improving math and science education.

A group of NASA engineers is investing their own time and money into developing the first lunar landing craft in 40 years. Project Morpheus plans to give the lander a test run at the Johnson Space Center in May 2011.

The collaboration between NASA and the Armadillo Aerospace company working on the lander appears to be inline with the commercialization of the U.S. space program. Read more here
