Last week, the Space Technology Hall of Fame inducted three new members for their work in developing a bioreactor that was commercialized in 1993.

The bioreactor “enables the growth of tissue, cancer tumors, and virus cultures outside the body, both in space and on Earth. The co-developers and new inductees are: Dr. Tinh Trinh, Dr. David Wolf, and Ray Schwarz. Read the press release

Two researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (CA) have determined that “minor changes to the military’s combat helmet could reduce the incidence and severity” of head injuries.

Michael King (MA E ’01), mechanical engineer, and Willy Moss, physicist, have been working on a year-long study researching how to protect military personnel from blast-induced traumatic brain injury.

The New York Times reported from the recent New York auto show and spoke with senior engineer, Jim Kliesch (OH D ’95), of the Union of Concerned Scientists, about the new class of fuel efficient vehicles.

Surprisingly, there were few new hybrid models, but several new designs to add fuel economy to gasoline vehicles. The article and Kliesch suggest that automakers, when properly motivated, can deliver more fuel-efficient cars. Read the full article
