STEM programs and schools are catching on in Minnesota. In a recent article from the Star Tribune, several of the STEM initiatives are highlighted.
In Richfield (MN), a STEM school opened last fall and now has 21 teachers who are STEM-certified. Engineer and assistant professor at St. Catherine University, Yvonne Ng (NJ D ’91), helped train the specialty staff at Richfield.
In the near future STEM training will be expanded to other staff outside of STEM schools. Read more here

Spaceflight Now reports on a new carbon-covered heat shield developed for NASA’s next mission to Mars.

Laura M. Barito, NJ A 2011, and Zachary W. Carr, NJ A 2011, from Stevens Institute of Technology have swept the honors for the 2011 Empire 8 Senior Scholar-Athlete awards.
“The award honors student-athletes that best exemplify what it means to be a dedicated scholar and athlete over the course of their four-year collegiate careers.”
Barito is an 18-time All-American in swimming and the first Stevens NCAA national champion. Carr holds the second longest string of shutouts in NCAA men’s soccer history. Click here for the news release with information on their academic and athletic accomplishments.
